Patient Care Issues

Our Struggle for Our Patients

Over a year ago, Saint John's RNs presented the hospital administration with an in-depth report detailing, unit-by-unit, the concerns we have about how administration policies adversely affect patient care.  Most commonly, RNs are forced to care for more patients, or sicker patients, than is allowed by law.

The administration responded to the report with denial and retaliation. The problems remain.

We feel that we can only advocate for our patients if we have a collective voice and enforceable standards guaranteed by a CNA contract.

Nurses know that safe patient care requires manageable RN-to-patient ratios. Many RNs at Saint John's have expressed concern about staffing at Saint John's, yet at least one administrator has denied that ratios are effective in protecting patient safety.

Now a major new study led by one of the nation's most eminent nurse researchers provides compelling new evidence that California's landmark RN-to-patient staffing lew reduces patient mortality, assures nurses have more time to spend with patients, and substantially promotes retention of experienced RNs.
